Phil Baroni wants back in the Zuffa family
There?s a shit-ton of Phil Baroni interviews floating around in anticipation of his ION-broadcast prelim fight against Brad Tavares, but my favorite is this one with Jonathan Snowden. Say what you will about his agent provocateur role at Bloody Elbow or his recent fellating of Strikeforce, but the dude gets some great stories out of the fighters he interviews, like this:
"I go back with those guys a long time," Baroni said. "I don't get to talk to them as much anymore because they are busy, traveling around the world and doing great things. Joe Silva was my good friend. I'd drive him around because he didn't have a car. We'd go to find him comic books and he'd take me out to lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. It was cool. I'd go to Joe's office and watch tapes and it was like a soundtrack to the world. Back then the tapes were in different languages. We'd watch fights from Brazil and they'd be in Portuguese. We'd watch fights from Japan like Pancrase and SHOOTO and it was cool. I got to be real tight with those guys. Dana, when I tore my back and was out for almost a year, he took me to Hawaii for the first time. Those guys were good to me. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to win for them and it's a business. But I plan on winning now and getting back into the Zuffa family. I got to know these guys back then when they started and I'm proud of them. I want to be a part of what they are doing today."
I?m a total Baroni nuthugger and will be cheering for him to knock Tavares? block off. And in that spirit, here?s a highlight of oldschool Baroni taking people out:

UFC 125 Press Conference Video
UFC President Dana White, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, No. 1 contender Gray Maynard and others will all meet the media on Wednesday for the UFC 125 press conference, and we'll stream the video here at MMAFighting.com.The pre-fight press conference usually includes some pre-fight trash talk, although Edgar and Maynard have been awfully quiet on that front. The UFC may be counting on the talkative Leben to sell the pay-per-view.
The press conference begins at 4 PM ET and the video is below.

Antonio McKee: I Should Have UFC Belt by End of 2011
Filed under: UFC
Antonio McKee has a plan. It's simple, really."By the end of the year I should have the UFC [lightweight] belt," he told MMA Fighting. "I've got to get through [Jacob] Volkmann here, beat up Volkmann real quick, and after I get done with Volkmann they'll think I'm serious and we can start moving forward and making progress."
See? Nothing to it. After 11 years as a pro fighter, the 40-year-old McKee is set to make his Octagon debut at UFC 125 this Saturday, so of course he already has his future mapped out.
But does he really think becoming a UFC champion is going to be that easy? Seriously?
"Oh yeah, come on, man. I've got a four-fight deal, so I'd say that sounds about right. Randy [Couture] won the belt when he was about 44, right? I'll be 41 by the end of the year, and I think McKee is made of a little better stuff than Randy, so I should have it by then."

Chris Leben Talks DUI Arrest, Upcoming Bout with Brian Stann
Filed under: UFC, FanHouse Exclusive
It's been a year full of headlines for UFC middleweight Chris Leben, both good and bad. After making UFC history by notching two victories in the span of two weeks this past summer, Leben seemed to be in the midst of a career renaissance, going 3-0 in the first half of 2010.But in October Leben appeared to take a step backwards when he was arrested in Hawaii on suspicion of DUI. While he has a court date coming up in February of 2011, Leben said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour that he doesn't expect to face any serious consequences as a result of the incident.
"George [W.] Bush got a DUI and he ended up being the president," Leben told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani. "I really feel as though nothing's really going to happen with it, honestly. I don't want to talk about it too much, and it's still in the works. But I don't think it's going to be a big deal."

Anthony Pettis' Striking Coach Duke Roufus Talks About 'Showtime Kick'
Filed under: UFC, WEC, FanHouse Exclusive
It was the Kick Heard 'Round the World, a climbing, twisting, off-the-cage, out-of-the-video-games-and-into-Ben-Henderson's-face, mind-scrambler of a strike in the 25th and final minute of a WEC championship match that shot Anthony Pettis into the consciousness of sports fans everywhere. While his aim is to stay there for more than just one night, it's safe to say that regardless of his future, the 23-year-old cemented himself a place in MMA history by authoring one of the sport's most incredible moments.
According to his striking coach, kickboxing great Duke Roufus, it was no accident. Roufus told MMA Fighting that it's a kick that was conceived a few years ago and practiced weekly by Pettis during training camp.

Falling Action: Best and Worst of WEC 53
Now, I don't want to act like a jerk about something that's relatively minor (which is, of course, what you say right before you act like a jerk about something that's relatively minor), but seriously? What Pettis did was practically superhuman. Just to even think you could pull off a kick like that is so ambitious that it borders on delusional. To actually do it against the WEC lightweight champion in the fifth round of a title fight, that's a once in a lifetime moment.
Then again, I suppose it doesn't compare to a slam dunk. That only happens every single night during basketball season, and that doesn't even count the "And 1" tour.

Sean Pierson may lose cop job over UFC fight
(Was it the ultimate fighting or the ridiculous hat the police have a problem with? From this picture I must surmise that Pierson is a cage fighting drug pimp)
Ever get the feeling that half the police force is made up of douchebags from high school who didn't exactly behave admirably the last time they had power over the weak? This fear was partially confirmed during the Countdown to UFC 124 when we learned that Josh Koscheck was on the way to becoming a cop before fighting came along.
So what does the police force do to cull out the jackasses and dick faces? They keep an eye on what you do and decide based on that if you might be a problem. Unfortunately, it looks like participating in human cockfighting is considered a red flag to the Toronto PD, who are making Sean Pierson chose between them and the UFC:
Pierson stepped down from his position as an accounts manager with Dell Canada three months ago and was recently hired by Toronto Police. The aspiring welterweight fighter was told he must make a choice between one job or the other.
?(Toronto Police) said there was a conflict with what I do with mixed martial arts and the police,? Pierson said. ?The timing was bad. The fight was on Dec. 11 and I was supposed to start with the police force on Dec. 14. It?s unfortunate for me that I have to make a choice between a career and pursue a dream.?
Compounding Pierson?s possible decision is his age. Being 34 years old, Pierson realizes his mixed martial arts career might not last too long. If Pierson was in his late teens and fighting, he said the situation would be far different.
?I don?t have a lot of time due to my age,? he said yesterday.
Pierson said he hasn?t made up his mind yet and will have a meeting with his new employers on the situation.
I think everyone agrees that Pierson's domination of Matt Riddle was impressive, but it doesn't let us know if he can hang with the sharks of the UFC welterweight division. And I bet when Sean puts together one of those pro / con lists to help make a decision, all the pros are on the police job side and all the cons are on the UFC side. But here's the biggest pro for sticking with the UFC: you can always re-apply for a job with one of the hundreds of police departments later, but the UFC only comes knocking once. Fuck the police - chase the dream, Sean!
The UFC returns to the birthplace of modern MMA
The UFC's attempts to become global aren't just about ego and status - one of the big reasons they're trying to spread as quickly as they can is so a loss of interest in one region doesn't wipe them out completely (like what happened to MMA in Japan). Up to this point the focus has been on Europe - specifically countries with strong economies like the UK and Germany.
But with Europe now on the same financial edge as North America (seriously, we have big problems and no one's doing anything about them), a new market has suddenly become interesting: Brazil. The UFC had a press conference yesterday and announced their first South American show in 12 years will be held in Rio de Janeiro on August 27th. Kevin Iole reports on why the sudden interest:
Brazil is one of four countries that investment firm Goldman Sachs refers to as the ?BRIC? countries, along with Russia, India and China. In a 2005 research paper, Goldman Sachs noted that the combined economy of the four countries would exceed the combined economies of the world?s richest countries by 2050.
The Goldman Sachs paper predicts Brazil?s economy will soon become one of the five largest in the world. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Brazil?s economy is expected to expand 7.6 percent in 2010, its fastest rate of growth in two decades.
That and the country?s passion for MMA made a live event in Brazil a no-brainer, White said.
Considering the country's passion for MMA was alive and well last year when the Fertittas listed Brazil as a less important market than Italy and Spain, I'll stick with 'Brazil is no longer a cesspool of poverty and crime' as the reason. The police spent a good portion of last month sweeping drug dealers out the favelas as part of a 5 year plan to clean things up for the Olympics. So now the UFC just has to hope it's event doesn't spark the kind of crazy riots MMA has caused in the past, otherwise it might find itself as another undesired element in Brazil's efforts to fix up it's image.

Abu Dhabi cheaps out on the UFC
It's official: Abu Dhabi is out, New Jersey is in for UFC 129. That's the event set to feature the long awaited Shogun Rua vs Rashad Evans, plus Tito vs Lil Nog and Frank Mir vs Brendan Schaub. As for why the event ended up getting moved, you'll have to look back to a week ago when reports started coming out of a problem in the Middle East.
"We're still working on it," White said. "It just depends on our schedule and what we do. The guys in Abu Dhabi want a fight, so we'll see what happens.
"(But) you can't go there in the summer."
The UFC's first Abu Dhabi show took place outdoors at Concert Arena at the Ferrari World theme park on Yas Island. However, the temporary venue no longer exists, and officials haven't nailed down a replacement site.
The obvious question is why can't Abu Dhabi just throw together another stadium like last time? Sure, it was pretty baller to do it the first time around. But it's a sad day indeed when interest amongst your part-owner Sheikhs drops to the point where they aren't willing to blow several million dollars on an arena structure that will only exist for one event. But how about this for a novel idea, Abu Dhabi: why not build an arena ... and then don't tear it down?

Dominance of Georges St. Pierre Is in the Details
Filed under: UFC
Last Friday, the night before UFC 124, company president Dana White ran into Josh Koscheck in the host hotel, just a block away from the Bell Centre in Montreal. The two shared a few words, and during the conversation, Koscheck shared his prediction that Georges St. Pierre would refuse to strike with him during their championship fight. The belief that St. Pierre has become a wrestling-dependent, "safe" fighter has become so widespread that even Koscheck -- before the biggest moment of his life -- felt sure it was his opponent's likeliest course of action. It turned out to be the wrong assumption. The fight spent just 68 seconds on the mat, as St. Pierre kept the action standing, where he out-struck Koscheck over five rounds, bloodying him and breaking his right orbital bone en route to a division record-tying fifth straight title defense.
While statistics don't tell the whole story, they help illuminate the fallacy of many criticisms lobbed against the UFC's welterweight champion.

Stefan Struve Wants to Get to 280 Pounds for Lesnar, Carwin, Etc.
Because of a variety of issues, the UFC may well put Struve into the mix with the biggest of its big names, including Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, athletes who cut down to make the division's 265-pound limit. And while Struve thinks he's ready for the move skill-wise, he would prefer to take a little more time to put on the muscle he feels is necessary to face the UFC's monster heavyweights.

Donald Cerrone: I Feel Like I'm on the Chopping Block
Filed under: WEC
GLENDALE, Ariz. - Donald Cerrone may not be meeting his old pal Jamie Varner for a third time when the WEC rolls out its final event on Thursday night, but that doesn't mean they aren't thinking about each other."I would love that fight again, and again, and in the parking lot, and wherever I can get it," Cerrone said at Tuesday's WEC 53 open workouts. "But it'll come in due time. Hopefully he wins his next fight and I can see him in the UFC. I plan on whipping his a-- every chance I get, so I don't ever plan on letting him dictate one round or one second of any fight ever again."
It's a sentiment that's likely shared by Varner, who recently described Cerrone as a "lonely, uneducated hillbilly" in an interview with MMA Fighting. But while Cerrone admitted he wasn't aware of that latest salvo, even he seems to be on the verge of acknowledging that the time might have come for him to finally move on from that rivalry after winning a unanimous decision in their last meeting.
Some habits, however, die hard.

Dana White Names Possibilities for Ultimate Fighter Coaching Jobs
Filed under: UFC, FanHouse Exclusive, News
Upon returning to his Las Vegas office on Monday morning after a hugely successful UFC 124 event, company president Dana White has several items that will require fairly immediate attention. Among the most pressing is selecting coaches for the upcoming season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter. The series is scheduled to begin taping in just a few weeks, and White admits he's late in picking the men who will lead two teams in competition and later battle it out themselves.
Though he says the decision is far from made, he shared with MMA Fighting some possibilities for the job.
