Falling Action: Best and Worst of UFC Fight Night 24
Filed under: UFC
If ever there was an event to make aspiring fighters get out their singlets and focus on their wrestling skills, UFC Fight Night 24 was it.The ability to successfully complete and/or defend the takedown was the deciding factor in most of the fights on Saturday night. By the end, I think half the arena had unconsciously learned how to shoot a single-leg just from seeing it done over and over and over again. Bet that made for some interesting after-parties.
So who were the biggest winners, losers, and everything in between after Saturday night's wrestle-fest? The answers await you below.

Who's that girl?
Speaking of people who may or may not have a job at "UFC: Rio", Sherdog has a new gallery of pics from the set of TUF 13, and hey look who showed up to "interview" Junior dos Santos... none other than our old friend Juliana "Juju" Salimeni. The star members may recall my Pulitzer-winning very first article for Fightlinker, in which we had a thorough but respectful look at Juju's NSFW assets. For those of you who are too cheap and heartless to help support Ryan's cough syrup addiction, well, no fap material for you. Just kidding, HERE'S her spread in the Brazilian edition of Playboy.
As for who this big-bottomed broad is, she's supposedly the Brazilian fanbase's polite suggestion for the job of guest Octagon Girl at the Rio event. Juju became famous for her role on a popular show called "Panico na TV" as a "Panicat" (translation: professional T&A jiggler), and is apparently considered one of the top hotties in the country these days.
So does her appearance at the TUF gym mean she's got the UFC gig, or is this just a segment for that "Panico" show? And what's with that dude's nose? Who knows. The point is, while she looked great in the above links, and even the pic at the top is flattering, as for the next one after the jump...

Phil Davis: If Dana White Says Get 'Em, I Got 'Em
Filed under: UFC
SEATTLE - Phil Davis improved to 9-0 with a unanimous decision win over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24, but that doesn't mean he's going to start calling for a title shot just yet.Yes, it was the most significant win of his career so far, Davis acknowledged at the post-fight press conference, but he's in no hurry to jump all the way to the top of the light heavyweight ladder.
"Pretty much everyone I've ever fought has had more experience than I have in fighting," said Davis. "So just going through four fights in one year in the UFC has put me in a place where everyone is a lot more experienced than I am, so I just need to make sure I'm giving myself enough time to develop as a fighter."

Royce Gracie still thinks he's fighting at "UFC: Rio"
Receiving a surprise invite to the press conference announcing "UFC: Rio" must have really gotten Royce Gracie's hopes up, because he's still under the delusion that he'll get a legacy fight on that card. Since then, he keeps talking like he's in negotiations with the UFC about it, despite the fact that the combined number of fans and Zuffa brass who seem the least bit interested in his "comeback" can be counted on one hand... of a retired sawmill worker... with leprosy.
His last Octagon appearance against then-welterweight champ Matt Hughes in 2006 is perhaps best described as a sad and brutal demonstration of how far the sport had evolved since the single-digit UFCs of Royce's salad days, as "Country Breakfast" utterly destroyed Gracie in the first round without appearing to break much of a sweat. Now consider the evolution we've seen just since 2006... the other champs at the time were Tim Sylvia, Chuck Liddell, and Rich Franklin, and the lightweight strap was on hiatus. GSP won the belt later that year, Arianny was brand-spanking-new, Tito Ortiz was still (mostly) relevant, and Jon Jones probably hadn't even seen the inside of an MMA gym yet. The idea of putting Royce in the cage with anyone even remotely relevant to today's UFC (or even the sport in general) sounds like a death sentence, especially since he's now 44 and hasn't fought in four years.
But I guess old dreams die hard, because CagePotato reports that Royce has canceled a European seminar tour in order to focus on training for the Rio event in August, though even his manager admits: "Nothing is locked down, no." That's apparently not stopping them from tearing up a guaranteed paycheck in favour of chasing a pipe-dream though.
So what's the Baldfather got so say about this? Well coincidentally, I happened to catch the last minute or two of "MMA Connected" just prior to the "Fight Night 24" broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet, in which Dana White was straight-up asked about it (among other things, like Strikeforce, teammate fights, unions, Sonnen/Bisping, GSP/Silva, and UFC 129). It's at 2:14 of the video above, but if you sneeze you might miss it, because his entire answer was: "I don't think so." In print, that doesn't sound definitive one way or the other, but something about his demeanor tells me that he could give a shit if Royce even shows up to watch.

Chan Sung Jung Practiced Twister Over and Over Because It 'Looks Fun'
Who says that all that time spent watching videos on the internet is wasted? For Chan Sung Jung, the videos he found online of Eddie Bravo's unconventional twister submission helped him defeat Leonard Garcia at UFC Fight Night 24 and add an extra $55,000 to his bank account in the process.
"It's something that I saw a long time ago on the internet on video," Jung said via a translator during Saturday night's post-fight press conference. "It's one of Eddie Bravo's techniques. It's something I practiced because it just looks fun, and so I do it quite a bit in practice. I always told people I was going to try it some time in competition and I wanted to do it in the UFC and I was able to."

MMA Top 10 Bantamweights: Cruz, Faber on a Collision Course
Filed under: UFC, WEC, Rankings, Bantamweights
The two best 135-pound fighters in the world will square off some time later this year for the first ever UFC bantamweight title match in what should be a great showcase for what has quietly become one of the UFC's most talented weight classes. Before the UFC absorbed World Extreme Cagefighting, the smaller guys were largely overlooked by casual MMA fans. But now that the UFC has added the WEC's bantamweights -- and also snapped up some 135-pounders from other promotions -- the bantamweight class is stacked. In fact, as I put together my latest ranking of the Top 10 bantamweights in mixed martial arts, all 10 of them are now under contract to the UFC.
The top two, as you probably suspect, are bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and the only man to defeat him, Urijah Faber. Those two will square off at UFC 132. But the rest of the bantamweight division includes several talented fighters who could become worthy challengers to the bantamweight title in the years ahead.

Jose Canseco is the dumbest bastard in sports.
Like all of us who follow MMA and other sports, I've heard tell of athletes doing some pretty stupid stuff. Gazillionaire football players running drugs and guns and trying to start fights with Bas Rutten, boxers allowing themselves to be managed by the single sleaziest businessman ever to involve himself in sports, soccer players throwing lawn darts at youth training teams...the list goes on and on. But this one is a real goddamn doozy. The idiot at the center of this particular shitstorm of dumbness is only peripherally involved in MMA, but who cares? Let's all point and laugh at him! The scene: Jose Canseco is set to take part in a "Celebrity Boxing" match at the Hard Rock Hotel in Seminole, Florida. He shows up demanding 5 grand in cash up front, which the promoter doesn't give him because he wants to pay with a check. And from there, things went a little "Dumb & Dumber":
A half-hour before the scheduled bout, here was the scene: Lindsay Lohan's father, Michael, was waiting in Jose's corner. The opponent, trainer Billy Padden, waited in the ring. The music to introduce Jose Canseco began playing. When he didn't show, it played again.
"I still wasn't going to pay cash, and that's when [Ozzie] walked out,'' Feldman said. "About then people began telling me it wasn't really Jose, too. They pointed to the tattoos on his arms.
Yep, Jose sent his twin brother Ozzie out to fight for him. No, really. Ozzie was promptly busted and the fight didn't happen. Granted, Canseco's celebrity boxing record is less than stellar--he's dropped "fights" to washed-up NFL players and the craziest ginger in the world--and his moral compass was smashed into tiny pieces long ago, but this is a pretty hilarious new low for the roided-up former ballplayer. In fairness to Canseco, bad things usually happen when he shows up for a fight. Of course, this is one of the best things about sports, be it mixed martial arts or tennis or whatever else: we get to give some very stupid people insane amounts of money and fame and then watch them fuck it all up so completely that it defies belief. Awesome.

Dan Hardy Gets Emotional While Visiting Bruce Lee's Grave
But when last year's UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs. Hardy series aired footage of the time Hardy spent in Northern China training with Shaolin monks, "The Outlaw" began receiving more respect from the MMA community for being a true mixed martial artist.
On Thursday, Hardy showed just how much respect he has for the history of martial arts when he visited Bruce Lee's grave at Lakeview Cemetery in Seattle, Wash. The visit was so moving, it brought the 28-year-old Hardy on the verge of tears.
"I don't want this to sound disrespectful," Hardy told The Seattle Times, "I kind of treated it as a bit of a sightseeing kind of thing, to come and see Bruce Lee's grave just to say that I've been there and done it. But to be here, I don't know, I kind of got something else from it."

Michael Bisping apologizes poorly
Michael Bisping took some time out of his busy schedule of being a flaming cock to 'apologize' for what he did at UFC 128.
?I was out of order. As a father, as a mixed martial artist, or possibly even as a role model, it?s not a way I should be behaving. It?s not how a mixed martial artist should be acting; not how any man should be acting. Of course, I do regret it, and I owe Dana [White, UFC CEO], and the UFC an apology?and I won?t be acting like that again.?
Since this is Michael Bisping though, he can't leave well enough alone. Here comes the hair-splitting:
I want to make it clear ? I never spat on his cornerman. I spat on the floor to let him know what I thought of him?
And don't forget though that Rivera and his team WENT TOO FAR!
What this guy was doing was that he was insinuating my partner had a sexually transmitted diseases, talking crap about my country, crap about my family, insinuating I was not even English, chanting a song that I was a d? d? d?, it just went over the top really and I shouldn?t have let it get to me. But it did.
Of course, he still wants an apology out of Jorge:
I?m ashamed of myself and I have apologised, he [Rivera] should be man enough to do the same.
Yeah, the dude you illegally kneed in the head owes you an apology! For a bunch of laughably silly videos which were obviously harmless. You have to be on the emotional level of an autistic 12 year old to get pissed by those. But after cheating to win a fight and then spitting at the losing fighter's corner, Michael Bisping is still waiting for the apology that he deserves. What a twat.

Phil Davis in No Rush to Make Jon Jones Fight a Reality
Filed under: UFC, FanHouse Exclusive, News
At the UFC 126 post-fight press conference, Urijah Faber said he was looking forward to one day seeing Jon Jones fight Phil Davis for the light heavyweight title. He's not the only one.
Since Jones won the belt on Saturday, and to a degree even before UFC 128, media, fans, and even fighters have pegged Davis as the man who could give the unstoppable Jones trouble inside the Octagon.
That's a huge compliment for a 26-year-old who only made his MMA debut in October 2008.
But Davis (8-0), who faces Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 24 this Saturday, says he isn't concerning himself with anything other than what's next.

Jon Jones Opens as Huge Favorite Over Rashad Evans, Fans Bet Him Up Further

UFC 128 AFTERMATH BURNING QUESTIONS
No, I'm not answering questions about what's burning in your mother's crotch region. What I'm here to address are some of the more prevalent questions that have been floating around the MMA blogosphere in the wake of Saturday's UFC 128 card. Let's get to it.
Does Jim Miller deserve a shot at the UFC Lightweight Title?
I can't believe how often I've seen this question posed, and I also don't really understand why it's being framed like that in the first place. The short answer is yes, Miller absolutely deserves a shot. The Jersey-based fighter is now on a seven-fight win streak, having stopped two previously unbeaten fighters in his last two trips to the Octagon. If that doesn't scream "championship worthy" to you, then I'd have to seriously question your judgment on all life decisions. But the question shouldn't be whether the younger Miller brother deserves a shot at the title, but what he'll have to do to actually get one.
What stands in Miller's way right now is a combination of bad timing and those lone two losses he has on his twenty-two fight resume.
Despite earning his seventh consecutive win this weekend, Miller has entered the short list to a title shot at a time when there is already a fight booked that will produce a clear-cut #1 contender: Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis. Say what you will about how Miller might deserve it more than either of those two, but the fact is that both Guida and Pettis are each coming off a higher profile victory than anything Miller has done as of late. On top of that, Pettis has already earned a title shot, so it follows that the winner of his fight with Guida should produce the next title challenger. Barring an injury to either of those two, Miller simply isn't getting the next title shot.
More after the jump.

MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Jon Jones Surges
Filed under: UFC, Rankings, Overall
The last time I ranked the Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in MMA, I heard from a lot of readers who thought it was too early to have Jon Jones on the list.No one is going to say that now.
After Jones smashed "Shogun" Rua at UFC 128, the question isn't whether Jones is one of the sport's Top 10 pound-for-pound fighters -- everyone agrees that he is. Now the question is just how high Jones belongs on the pound-for-pound list.
I think Jones is doing things we haven't seen before, and dominating his opponents in ways that few fighters can equal, and so I have Jones among the truly elite on my latest list, which is below.

UFC Wastes No Time Pitting Jones Against Evans, With Good Reason
Filed under: UFC
NEWARK, N.J. - Call it the championship life cycle: one legend is barely out of his post-knockout haze, his facial tissue still in mid-swell, when the new champ is already confronting his next challenger on a canvas where the blood hasn't even dried yet.It wasn't an unfamiliar encounter when former training partners Jon Jones and Rashad Evans shook hands in the middle of the Octagon before agreeing to beat each other up at some point in the near future. It also wasn't exactly an enthusiastic agreement on either man's part, though it was a decisive one.
Jones didn't just beat Mauricio "Shogun" Rua to claim the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 128 - he utterly demolished him. In a little less than three full rounds of combat, there wasn't a second where it wasn't Jones' fight. Aside from possibly hurting his elbow on Rua's skull, Jones had almost nothing to worry about in the biggest fight of his career.

UFC 128: Brendan Schaub Knocks Out Mirko Cro Cop
Filed under: UFC
A fairly slow-paced heavyweight fight ended in a sudden burst of violence Saturday night, as Brendan Schaub delivered a stunning knockout blow to Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 128.Late in the third round, with the fight looking close to going the distance, Schaub hit Cro Cop with a huge right hand that sent Cro Cop head-first into the canvas. Cro Cop was already out, but Schaub pounced and landed another hard punch before referee Herb Dean stopped it.
Schaub, who improved his record to 8-1, hugged the legendary Cro Cop afterward and said, "You're the reason I got started, Mirko."

Good signs / Bad signs
Trying to figure out if your favorite fighters are going to suck or not tonight? A quick look into the news might give you some more info on that subject. Let's see what might be affecting guys in the cage at UFC 128.
Kurt Pellegrino: With all the attention focused on Shogun Rua's knee issues, barely anyone has mentioned that Kurt is returning from a torn ACL as well. Sometimes when an athlete battles back from a bad injury to return early, it's inspirational. Other times it's a recipe for disaster. The prognosis from doctors was that Pellegrino would be out for at least a year. He's coming back 8 months later. We know the mind is willing but can the body deliver?
Brendan Schaub: The specter of overtraining reared it's ugly head during Brendan's preparations for Mirko Crocop. According to Schaub himself, things fell apart 'several weeks out' from the fight, leading his camp to force a training break on the heavy hitting heavyweight. How much a three day break helps reset things will be something we'll have to see on Saturday night. Schaub may have tried his best to prepare himself for the biggest fight of his life, only to have that backfire and actually hurt his performance.
Nate Marquardt: Every so often, we get to see the Nate Marquardt who really deserves his 'Nate the Great' nickname. Remember when he pulled off a Killer Instinct level combo on Wilson Gouveia? Or the time he almost ripped Jeremy Horn's head off with a guillotine from hell? Then there are times where he fights like a fuckin' bum. The Chael Sonnen and Yushin Okami fights come to mind.
Which Nate will show up against Dan Miller? Whichever Nate his coaches have programmed. The good news is these coaches have admitted they screwed the pooch on his past fights. During a recent media supertour to get out from under Greg Jackson's shadow, coach Trevor Wittman took 'full responsibility' for the Okami fight, saying their counter-striking gameplan didn't work and they had no plan B to fall back on. Whatever they cobble together for last minute replacement Dan Miller, let's hope at least they keep some B, C, and D ideas up their sleeves. Maybe one of these will actually be 'let your hands go, be aggressive and kick some ass.'
Mike Pyle: Mike must have gotten sick of his rep as a monster in the gym who just couldn't put it together in the cage. He's now put together a two fight win streak including a trouncing of hot prospect John Hathaway where I started to see what all the hype was about. Will he be able to keep moving up against Ricardo Almeida. According to most people, it all depends on Kyle's head. And to insure that his head is in the right place, he's been spending a decent amount of time with a sports psychologist.
