Junior Dos Santos is an attention whore?
I just recently caught up on this season of TUF. What can I say, Dana is totally right when he says the 9pm timeslot is why no one is watching. Or maybe it's because it's become a carousel of Who Gives a Shit topped with some of the worst fights ever televised. Seriously, when the possibility of a third round leaves you going "Oh Baby Jesus no!", there's a problem. But hey, at least there's a teensy tiny bit of drama now.
With Brock Lesnar seemingly set on limiting his show participation to screaming 'CHICKENSHIT CHICKENSHIT CHICKENSHIT!', we're stuck clinging to a feud that's developed between Junior Dos Santos and his wrestling coach Lew Polley. On the show, Junior occasionally had to rein in Lew, who was getting a bit aggro with the wurrior fight rhetoric. Kinda like he gets a bit crazy here:
"On this recent episode you'll get to see Junior's true nature come out, when he starts getting hungry for the camera. He starts pushing things out of the way and putting me in the crossfire. He would always ask me to help, always ask me to lead his session, always ask me to do this, do that, and I would do it because he asked me. Then he gets upset because the guys start to warm up to me and ask my advice. He gets pissed because I start doing a good job."
"You can watch every episode and you'll see his demeanor changes. He becomes more of a prick as the season moves on. Everybody's kissing Junior's ass left and right and I'm not gonna do that. Basically Junior's full of shit and it came out in this episode. Junior's biggest problem is he's an attention-whore and he didn't get the attention he wanted so he took it out on me and the reason why is I speak English. People would ask me to do things and he didn't like it. He became a big baby, always complaining. Dude, we're winning, so what is your big issue?"
I dunno, all I've seen thus far is Lew overplaying every 'hard ass coach' stereotype in the book while the fighters look at Junior in confusion. There's a fine line between helping and taking over. Do you think Rashad Evans was really the one doing the coaching or was it his 'assistant' Greg Jackson? But on camera it was all "You're the boss, Rashad." Coaches are used to being in charge, especially when it comes to guys they've trained. Maybe that had a little more to do with it than Junior's attention whore qualities...

Helpful tips for enjoying the UFC Fan Expo
The UFC is on a good roll with humor-based content lately, first with that Chuck Liddell video and now with these tips from Kenny Florian on how to rock the UFC Fan Expo. Some of my favorites:
* Have spotters and look-out crews to alert the masses. "Hey everyone! That's Chuck Liddell!!" Don't hesitate to yell this even when he isn't there - it's great for breaking up crowds and getting to the front of a non-Chuck line faster.
* If you see one of the UFC?s Octagon girls, be original with your pick up lines. For example: ?You have beautiful eyes, can I touch them??
* Always give a fighter some fight tips when you see them. ?You need to throw more kicks,? ?You need to keep your hands up bro,? or, ahem, ?Work on your wrestling, Kenny." Most fighters don?t have time to think about this stuff so these comments are a big help.
* If you want immediate respect walking around the expo then please bring your most violent t-shirt. Nothing says "I love MMA" like an XXXL "bleeding Lion" or a "sword carrying pit-bull."
My tips:
* Bring plenty of rotten produce to throw at Sean Sherk, Brandon Vera, and Jason Brilz. Don't make the rookie mistake of using it all up on Sherk just because you saw him first.
* Don't forget to ask Arianny Celeste "Hey, where's Logan?", "Where's Natasha?", "Where's the CagePotato booth?", or some combination of the three.*Also tell her that as a registered boob doctor you'd be happy to take a closer look at that mole you noticed by her left nipple in her Playboy spread. This may work better if you figure out a more official term than 'boob doctor.' Mammastician? Knockerologist?
* This is your opportunity to set the record straight on every scoring controversy you've ever had to endure. Make a citizen's arrest on Leonard Garcia for his 'string of robberies'.* Offer Machida a bottle of urine and tell him you made it for his dad.

GSP doesn't wanna become RJJ
Goddamn I can't wait for April 30th. Not because of Georges St Pierre vs Jake Shields (although it should still be a great fight). But because afterward we'll finally be able to ask about this Anderson Silva superfight without that bullshit 'one fight at a time' answer being used to deflect GSP's intentions. Thus far signs have been cloudy, with occasional glimmers of hope mixed in with many signs of doubt:
"Right now, I am a 170-pounder," St. Pierre said. "If I were to fight at 185 pounds, it would be a complete reorientation of my career.
"We've seen in the past with boxers like Roy Jones Jnr. In my opinion, what ended Roy Jones' career-winning streak was when he went up in weight and tried to go back down. It's not the fact that he went up; it's when he tried to go back down that messed him up.
"For me, it's a good example because Roy Jones was known as one of the best of all time before he started losing. It makes me think twice sometimes [about changing] weight; it's not really going up that hurts you, sometimes it's to go [back] down."
The frustrating thing here is that few people are asking Georges to move up to 185. We just want that Anderson Silva fight. If GSP wants to stay at 170 and fight Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves again, or maybe Carlos Condit, Martin Kampmann, and Diego Sanchez, that's his prerogative. There's been indications that Anderson would be willing to meet at a catchweight. And sure, Silva is going to be bigger, but that's already a given and part of the challenge of this fight.
Yeah, GSP has to look out for his career. He's gotta worry about getting smashed Rich Franklin style and I'm sure he's still haunted by that time he lost to Matt Serra. But avoiding the biggest fight in the history of the sport because you might lose isn't what legends are made of. And maybe he should worry more about what happens if he doesn't take the Anderson Silva superfight. Playing it safe may seem like the smartest idea right now, but in the long run his career may end up being judged more for what he didn't do than what he did. Avoiding challenges is no way to cement your legacy as one of the best mixed martial artists in history.

Jon Jones Injured; Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis Booked for UFC 133
A hand injury has knocked the new UFC light-heavyweight champion out of action for the time being, leaving the UFC without a main event for its upcoming return to Philadelphia in August. As a result, the promotion has booked a fight pitting Jones' scheduled opponent Rashad Evans against rising star Phil Davis.
The UFC 133 fight was confirmed by the UFC on Monday morning. It was first reported by the Canadian Press.

Fights! UFC Rio edition
Zuffa matchmakers have been busy bees this past week filling out several cards, but for brevity's sake this Fights! post will stick to the card that's suddenly filled out like your teenage daughter. Not a girl, not yet a woman. I wonder what her undercard looks like?
Shogun Rua vs Forrest Griffin 2: We all thought Forrest Griffin had balls of steel when he asked to fight Shogun Rua the first time around. This was Shogun's first bout in the UFC - at the time he was 16-2 and considered the best light heavyweight in the world. He was also rushing back from a complete knee reconstruction. Forrest whupped Shogun for three rounds and choked him out with 15 seconds left in the fight. Now it's time for Shogun to attempt revenge in front of his home crowd. This may be easier said than done - Forrest took all of 2010 off and looked a lot less raggedy when he manhandled Rich Franklin last month.
Edson Barboza vs Ross Pearson: Ross has been impressing people with his improved striking lately but it's takedowns he'll need if he wants to survive his fight with Edson Barboza. The crappy thing about being a TUF winner is having enough name recognition to be fed to an up and coming ass kicker. This is going to be Barboza's coming out party, and Pearson is the piata that'll be lucky to make it out of the cage on his own two feet.
Luiz Cane vs Stanislav Nedkov: A quick mauling of Eliot Marshall isn't enough to prove to me that Luiz Cane is 'back', but he'll have another opportunity to impress us all against Nedkov. The Bulgarian once needed a split decision to defeat Kevin Randleman. In 2009! That's seven years past acceptable.
Thiago Tavares vs Spencer Fisher: Neither guys are gonna be competing for a belt any time soon but win or lose they consistantly put on some pretty entertaining fights. Since they've both been losing more than winning though, whoever drops this one will probably find themselves out of a job. And Tavares used to be part of the Thiago Triforce of Ass Kicking too...

'Like Water' Documentary a 3-D Look at Anderson Silva's Life in the Spotlight
Filed under: MMA Media Watch, UFC, News
"Like Water," the documentary film about UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, is like martial arts itself, a focus on journey as much as destination. The film follows Silva during arguably the most turbulent time of his fighting life, from just after his baffling performance against Demian Maia last April through his career-defining moment in a fifth-round comeback win against Chael Sonnen four months later. The film, which just had its world premiere at the renowned Tribeca Film Festival, is a step forward not only for Silva, but for mixed martial arts, which too often depends on manufactured drama as a selling point for its main events. Director Pablo Croce strips away any pretense and gives a three-dimensional look at the human side of one of MMA's signature athletes. In a sport that is often depicted as cartoonish or dismissed as a B-level fad by surface-grazing mainstream media, it is one of the first layered, mature examinations of a top fighter and his world. For some, it might come as a revelation that fighters are real people with real lives.
Central to the drama is Silva as a family man. For the Sonnen camp, he left Brazil for two months to live in Los Angeles and train with Team Black House. To do that, he leaves behind his family -- his wife, three sons and two daughters -- and spends much of the time pining for them. At one point before the Sonnen fight, he is asked what his goal is. "To come back home in one piece," he says without hesitation. For a champion at the top of his game, in the midst of a record title run, it's a candid admission, one rooted in his love of family, noting that to them, winning or losing is not important. "To them, I will always be champion," he says.

Ramsey Nijem on Winning His Fight, Painting His Toenails
Filed under: MMA Media Watch, UFC
Ramsey Nijem stepped into the cage and won his fight against Charlie Rader on this week's episode of The Ultimate Fighter, using his solid wrestling base to control Rader, take him down and finish him with a rear-naked choke. But this week's episode of the UFC's reality show focused almost as much on Nijem's personality outside the cage, where his habits -- including painting his toenails and watching Glee -- make him something very different from the stereotypical cage fighter.
In his weekly interview with MMAFighting.com, Nijem talked about his victory over Rader, shed a little more light on his personality outside the cage, and shared his thoughts on advancing to the next round of this season's Ultimate Fighter tournament.

Enson Inoue continues his work in Japan
Daniel Herberston is still up in the northern end of Japan where the quake and tsunami damage is worst, covering Enson Inoue and his attempt to provide evacuees with simple life necessities:
We had so many supplies that we decided to visit another evacuation center in the area first. Unscheduled visits can be difficult, and due to Enson's tattoos (typically a sign of the Japanese mafia), we were generally refused or forced to cut through a maddening amount of red tape before we can drop our supplies off for the people. To avoid the politics, we simply parked out the front of the evacuation center and announced that we had supplies and that people are welcome to come out and get anything they needed.
Glad to see people's priorities are in order, huh?
Before I left the lady stopped me and pointed to her jeans, sweater and slippers. "All of this came from Enson," she told me. "Everything everyone is wearing in here came from Enson. Aside from the military, you are really the only people to come here. The wine, sushi and cupcakes are so appreciated. We don't get luxuries like that here. Really, thank you."
It's pretty depressing to hear that Inoue is the only one showing up other than the military. This isn't the first time that sentiment has been shared in these articles. I can only hope these kinds of stories are exceptions rather than the rule, and most other centers are getting much more aid. Otherwise, WTF???
Herbertson says the next stop on their trip is Minamisanriku. Based on the video below of the town being hit, it's probably going to be a grim day. 95% of the buildings were destroyed and nearly half the population of 19,000 is unaccounted for.
