Yes, that Fernando Vargas. Per Cesar Gracie in the above video:
Cesar Gracie: They've contacted [Vargas] and he's very interested. We've actually signed on the dotted line for that fight and we're waiting for him now...it's on already. We've already signed for it, so we're looking at September or October...
Kenny Rice: So when's all this become official, you think?
Cesar Gracie: Right now.
Kenny Rice: Nick's next fight is going to be in the ring as a boxer?
Cesar Gracie: Right.
A lot of people think Nick Diaz is crazy (which he probably is), but Cesar Gracie seems just as bonkers. Now, the big caveat here is that Vargas himself has not signed to fight Diaz and we all know that until the ink is on the paper nothing is certain. But still, that's a pretty firm prediction from Cesar Gracie that the next time we see Nick Diaz fight he won't be wearing 4oz gloves.
"Interesting" isn't enough to describe this situation, particularly when you factor in Zuffa's usual reaction to these sorts of nutty schemes. Personally, I don't even know what to make of Diaz's batshit crazy career decisions these days. I wouldn't be shocked if he actually does fight Vargas. I would be equally unsurprised if he moves to the UFC to fight St. Pierre, or retires to live a quiet life of triathlons and non-stop weed smoking. What a fucking weirdo.
Update: Apparently the Vargas fight has fallen apart (surprise surprise) and Diaz is now looking to sign a fight with former IBF Super Middleweight Champion Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy (25-4, 17 KO):
"We were talking about Vargas, but the thing is, I just came under some information that Vargas apparently has some kind of medical issue where he's not able to pass the test any more, and he could be retiring," Gracie said. "Vargas was very interested, but unfortunately, if he can't pass the test, he can't pass the test."
That shifts the focus to a match with Lacy if Diaz's foray into pro boxing does materialize.
