You can fall down on your knees and thank Thor that another round of Fedor contract negotiations are officially over. According to M-1?s Russian site, the deal is done and locks in the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament that was rumored over the Viking Yule (also known as Christmas holidays to heretics). Here's M-1 leader Vadim Finkelstein sounding like he got every inch of his demands up Showtime's rectal cavity during negotiations:
"I am very pleased to collaborate with Showtime and Strikeforce, as well as Mr. Hershman and Mr. Coker personally. Together we can create a tournament that should go down in history as the greatest MMA tournament in the heavyweight division. The purpose cooperation between the M-1, Strikeforce and Showtime is the development and growth in popularity of MMA across the world. This sport is beyond the scope of individual organizations. Our partnership enables us to arrange fights the best fighters in the world with each other. From this agreement will benefit everyone - especially the fans, who want to see Fedor in as often as possible."
Yeah, something that hasn't happened over the past few years because some cocksuckers are too busy sucking giant cocks to sort out business crap in a reasonable and expedient manner.
Anyways, on to the tournament. Here's the deets: it'll be an 8-man field with quarter finals being held across a few events. It all starts on February 12th with Fedor facing Bigfoot Silva and Sergei Kharitonov versus Andrei Arlovski. Interestingly enough, when the tournament story was originally broken by Sherdog, the plan was Arlovski vs Josh Barnett. There's no word on why Barnett was switched out for Kharitonov - Barnett's license issues? Arlovski's self-preservation instinct? Showtime tweaking for ultimate stand-and-bang action? Whatever the case, that fight is kaput.
Another fight originally talked about but dead is Fabricio Werdum vs Brett Rogers for the second part of the quarterfinals in March. Yeah, I know that fight made no sense, but the whole point of this tournament is to shake up the etch-a-sketch that was Strikeforce's 2010 heavyweight matchmaking and pretend it didn't happen. Unfortunately for Strikeforce, it seems like Werdum is quite partial to his position as the legend killer who took out Fedor and he isn't willing to take a step down. This might actually be to his disadvantage since the logical conclusion would be to assume he'll end up fighting Alistair Overeem instead.
As for Overeem, he's still not included in any of this 8-man tourney madness. Maybe he'll be in it, maybe he won't. Considering he's fought 6 times since October, he might want a little break, or at least a champion's right to sit out and face the tournament winner. Whatever the case, it's not like Strikeforce doesn't have the roster to make a fine tourney without him. Fedor, Bigfoot, Kharitonov, Arlovski, Barnett (maybe), The Grim Rogers, Overeem's brother, and del Rosario would be pretty sweet. In fact, I'd say it's almost un-fuck-up-able. Almost.
