The question of fealty between fighter and coach seems to be the topic du jour this week. Several A-listers have tossed over their old entourage. Vitor Belfort left Shawn Tompkins, causing the former Xtreme Couture head coach to lash out, like Ryan Reynolds against Scarlett Johansson. Perennial nice guy, Georges St. Pierre managed his breakups with his manager (Shari Spencer) and trainer (Jon Chaimber) so deftly that both went on the record to say it was amicable, like Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.
Of course, amicable is crap. When one of the top two best P4P fighters in the world and a major source of revenue and status fires you there is usually a little ?rancor? and the spirit of ?friendly goodwill? does not rule. Amicable is the shit you say publicly, while off-the-record or through surrogates or sympathizers (?pals? in the jargon of US Weekly) you leak damning stories to the press.
One of those cropped up in a recent post by Cagepotato.com, complete with ?sources telling Cagepotato? and ?the reports we are hearing.? That is to say, a remarkable amount of reporting for a humor/commentary website. (At this rate, all of its bloggers may one day earn a byline.) The devil in these accumulated leaks and of the post?s conclusion turned out to be John Danaher, the no-gi instructor at Renzo Gracie?s Academy in Manhattan.
And that?s the reason I?m posting. Full disclosure, I was a student of John?s for a year and I am very loyal. So while I?m a big fan of Cagepotato (the writers are remarkably smart, funny, and prolific), I feel the obligation to once more take a thwack and hope they forget by the time (2020?) my book finally comes out.
To deconstruct: The ?set-up? of the piece?s demonology is that GSP has made this ?odd? decision to break-up his winning team, because he has come under ?the influence? of John Danaher, who is, by their accounts, a Rasputin-like character whispering sweet nothings to GSP not only on training and tactics?
But also on his life in general. The highly-regarded Renzo Gracie black belt instructor is a philosophy major who fancies himself somewhat of a pseudo life coach to the athletes he trains. It's said that St-Pierre has accepted him as a guru and that the New Zealander has his ear?
Where to start with this laughable paragraph?

It's been a while since the media has hyperfocused on the fact that a criminal also happened to have something to do with MMA. The last big buzz came from that religious nut who ripped out his buddy's heart during a Rapture-themed drug hallucination. Even with the 'heart ripped out of chest' angle, 'MMA fighter' was the second most important detail in that story.
Now we've got a dude who murdered two women and of course it's important that he be identified as having 'competed in Ultimate Fighting matches' by paragraph two:
Amy Henslee, the Michigan mom of two who vanished from her home three days ago, was found shot to death early this morning, police said. Her body was found buried with the corpse of another woman.
A man who has competed in Ultimate Fighting matches has been charged with the murders.
Beebe, nicknamed "JB," participated in ultimate fighting competitions. He was a member of the Southwest Michigan Ultimate Combat Fighting, a group of amateur Mixed Martial Arts fighters.
Beebe's Facebook profile shows pictures of him at the matches and several pictures of him with black eyes and injuries to his face.
Jeff Hill, founder of the amateur boxing group, said that Beebe joined the group about eight months ago. Beebe won a fight last weekend in three rounds, Hill said. Howarth, the girlfriend Beebe is accused of murdering, attended the fight.
Hill is shocked by the charges against Beebe, describing him as mild-mannered and not very aggressive in the boxing ring. He had a losing record of 3-6.
That statement from Hill basically translates to "Wow, he killed people? He seemed like a total pussy in the cage. The dude sucked." But I guess it's easier to be good at murder than fighting, especially when you're a chickenshit woman killer. If only using a gun was as difficult as MMA. Beebe would have been twice as likely to blow his own head off as anyone else's.

What's in the New York MMA bill
There's been a whole lot of "Rah rah let's legalize MMA in New York" fervor lately, but it's interesting to note that very few people have taken a look at the actual MMA bill which is winding it's way through the glacial digestive tract of the New York Senate. Jim Genia's got nothing better to do at the moment, so he breaks down some of the more interesting parts of the bill and what they mean. A few selections:
??Professional combative sports match or exhibition? shall mean any match or exhibition that must be approved by the Commission where the professional combative sports participants receive consideration of any value or admission is charged.? ? Crap, someone told them about the ?amateur? loophole.
?Nothing in this subdivision shall authorize the Commission to intervene or prohibit a professional combative sports match or exhibition solely on the basis of the difference between the respective participants? martial arts disciplines.? ? Tai Chi vs. Muay Thai? Oh baby, it?s on.
?No participant shall be allowed to participate in more than three matches or exhibitions or compete for more than sixty minutes within seventy-two consecutive hours.? ? One night, eight-man tournament? Bring it, homeboy.
?A tax is hereby imposed and shall be paid upon the gross receipts of every person holding any professional combative sports match or exhibition in this state. Such tax shall be imposed on the gross receipts as follows: 8.5% of gross receipts from ticket sales, and 3% of gross receipts from broadcasting rights, except that in no event shall the tax imposed exceed $50,000 for any match or exhibition.? ? And once again, the ?little guy? promoter gets screwed.
8.5% is pretty high and it'll be the end of an era when they shut down all those crazy underground MMA shows that have been going on for years. But on the plus side, you can have a whole lot of fun with fighters being allowed 60 minutes worth of fighting in 72 hours. Time to throw a three day kumite in New York city!

M-1 wants 'strict drug testing' for Strikeforce GP
M-1 held a press conference in Russia yesterday to push their next M-1 Challenge show and Fedor's participation in the Strikeforce Grand Prix. I've always said there's no better way to promote an event than to raise the specter of steroids, so here's M-1 head honcho Vadim Finklestein doing just that:
"Two out of eight fighters in the tournament previously failed a drug test. Obviously, I'm talking about Josh Barnett and Antonio Silva. We want fair competition for everyone, so that's why I will ask the commission to perform a strict drug testing. Fedor is not using any kind of substance to enhance his performance, and will be ready for any kind of testing. So if the commission decides to follow our suggestion, we'll be ready."
"Our organization paid a heavy price after the cancellation of the fight between Josh Barnett and Fedor. We did a lot of promotion for this fight, which in the end did not take place. That's why as a promoter and manager, I don't want this to happen ever again."
Note: Vadim Finkelstein was asked about Olympic Drug Testing, but never used the term in his answer. In an interview to Sports.ru, Finkelstein says the main goal is to ensure a fair competition for Fedor, and not to push for some sort of specific testing.
The end part is reassuring - I want to put a gun in my mouth and blow the brains out the back of my skull every time someone in MMA demands 'Olympic Drug Testing.'
There's still a bit of a problem, though: there's not really any 'strict' drug testing - there's the crappy piss test the commissions do, and you take it or leave it. I suppose Nevada and California are capable of random testing (not like they use it much). But ironically, the participation of MMA's most steroidy man (Monsieur Josh Barnett) means you won't be seeing events in these regions.
So basically we have to hope that this talk was just Vadim not so subtly firing cheating accusations at other GP participants. If it's any more than that, it'll be really fun when it's time for Fedor to face Josh Barnett or Alistair 'Steroid Bully' Overeem.

UFC 126 Prelims Return to Spike TV with Cerrone-Kelly, Mendes-Omigawa

Schaub's respect comes in a can of whup ass
I hate PDAs in MMA. The only high fives and hugs I want to see during a UFC event are during Bud Light commercials where everyone is soooooo excited about drinking beer-colored water. So it's with great pleasure that I hear Brendan Schaub say he's not interested in respecting Crocop with anything other than his fists:
?I respect the guy just as much as those guys do if not more. It was the same with Gonazaga. I respect these guys so much that I give them the best fight I can on the night. That?s my way of showing respect to these guys - I go in there and try and take their heads off. I put the pressure on them.
And his prediction for the fight with CroCop?
?There?s going to be no high-fiving. There?s going to be no hugging. I can tell you that.?
You can tell that's a shot at Pat Barry, and I feel a little bit bad that he's became the posterboy for being too lovey dovey during a fight. But that's what happens when you follow up a near destruction of Mirko Crocop with three hugs, a few fistbumps, and a submission loss. The guy broke his foot and hand - something that would make lesser men quit - and I guess being extra nice seemed like a legitimate gameplan at that point.
